Residents in the borough of Wokingham have been working hard to earn points by recycling their paper, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, cardboard and metal cans. Between September 2018 and February 2019 residents generously donated 164,538 Greenredeem points to the Robert Piggott C of E School as part of the Greenredeem school donations scheme.
As they received the most amount of points, the school was given a grant, worth £657.52. The school will be using the grant to develop their outdoor area to help improve their school environment through Outdoor Learning and helping to continue their 3R’s: Recycle, Reuse and Reduce.
Councillor Graham Howe, Deputy for Environment, Wokingham Borough Council said: “We are delighted to continue to support the Greenredeem scheme and enable residents to donate their recycling points to good causes and schools. The Robert Piggott C of E Infant School has been successful at encouraging friends and neighbours to recycle more and donate their points to this terrific school. Well done to the Robert Piggott Infant School!” Through Greenredeem, Wokingham Council continues its green policy to promote recycling and to be more environmentally aware.
Mrs Elaine Hughes, Head of School from the Robert Piggott C of E Infant School, said: ‘We participate in the Greenredeem donations scheme as not only does it support our desire to be ecologically aware and eco-friendly, it generates a lot of excitement as we log on to see how we are getting on in comparison to the competition! This year we are delighted to have received a cash reward!
We wanted to spend the reward on other resources or initiatives that encouraged our eco- friendly focus further, so we have treated ourselves to a new scooter and bike pod to keep the children’s belongings safe after they have made their way to school without a car. We have also bought plants which the children have nurtured and planted in our new planters.
They are now looking forward to seeing them flourish in the coming months. The children themselves will be debating what other projects to spend the remainder of the prize money on and our Eco Warriors Team will be facilitating this discussion and feeding back what the pupils have decided upon. All in all, it has been a great initiative and we look forward to entering again next year!”

There are currently 15 new schools that have joined the latest phase of the Greenredeem School Donations Scheme and Wokingham residents have already been generously donating their points to help their local schools benefit from a share of the £3,000.
The school donations scheme enables residents to donate their recycling points to local schools to help them earn grants for the development of initiatives that empower young people (3 to 18-years-old) in the areas of environmental awareness, education and action.
