PolyOne Corporation (NYSE: POL) has introduced the PlanetPakTM Packaging System for environment-friendly packaging of color and additive concentrates. The PlanetPak solution for transport and storage of materials offers sustainability and economic benefits over traditional steel-rimmed fiber drums.
The primary benefits for customers include:
- Environmental benefits: The PlanetPak package contains no metal bands or supports, and is made from corrugated linerboard, which is produced from recycled materials and can be recycled itself.
- Increased material handling safety: Its rectangular shape promotes easier and safer handling. Conversely, round drums are often rolled on edge to be moved, a dangerous and injury-prone practice.
- Improved space utilization: PlanetPak packages fit corner to corner, edge to edge, which is more efficient during transport, storage and disposal than cylindrical fiber drums. Furthermore, once the contents have been consumed, the package easily flattens for recycling or disposal.
- Lower total usage costs: Benefits are derived from more efficient storage and lower labor costs (because there are no metal components to separate from the fiber drums). Usage can also result in fewer lifting related injuries.
“The PlanetPak system represents a tangible, 21st-century advance over fiber drums and the challenges they pose,” said John Van Hulle, vice president and general manager, PolyOne Color and Additives. “In PlanetPak, customers have a recyclable, sustainable solution that also saves space and is easier to store in the warehouse and use in the workplace. We are delighted to offer this new, better business solution to our customers.”
The complete patent-pending PlanetPak Packaging System includes the PlanetPak package, a customized wooden pallet which elevates the box for easy access during shipment and warehouse movements, and a specially designed hand cart to enable material handlers to move the package without strain or injury.
