New Solutions to save real money in plastics recycling

2:50 min PET recycling systems
Meckesheim, Germany

With reduced margins it is time to cut costs. For the section “size-reduction/washing/ separation/drying HERBOLD MECKESHEIM has been developing quite a number of substantial improvements that we are now going to present:Fig..1: Stator knives with exchangeable stellite-tipped metal plates- for granulators:   cutting knives with exchangeable stellite-tipped plates (see Figure 1). This problem is well-know to every operator of granulators: Cutting knives for granulators are worn out and therefore tool steel that was expensive when it was bought is usually put on the scrap heap. The new solution using exchangeable stellite-tipped knives puts an end to this: Not only is the consumption of valuable, high-alloyed steel reduced to a minimum, but also the lifetime of these knives is many times higher.Fig.. 2: Pipe bend with wear plate- for abrasive materials:   pipe bends with wear plates (see Figure 2). with post-consumer plastic waste or glass-fibre reinforced plastics a high wear and tear is well known, as well in the suction units. For highly sensible components, such as pipe bends, cyclone separator and suction units, special design versions with exchangeable wear plates are available at HERBOLD MECKESHEIM; these wear plates are also available in highly wear-resistant materials.Fig..3: Interior view - for rotors in centrifugal dryers:   These components are also available with exchangeable wear plates and this means that downtimes and running costs will be reduced without the laborious complete exchange (see Figure 3). Fig..4 : Schematic diagram: Herbold granulators of the SB seriesIn addition, HERBOLD MECKESHEIM is continuously working on a programme to reduce the running costs of plastic recycling. The new series of the SB granulators with forced feeding is a milestone in this direction. This machine series, already successfully used in continuous operation at many recyclers essentially contributes to an energy reduction of up to 50 % (see scheme on the SB granulator/Figure 4).
