New PET sorting system in Frauenfeld relies on artificial intelligence

Zürich, Switzerland

PET beverage bottles have been sorted at Müller Recycling AG in Frauenfeld for over thirty years. The two sorting systems from 2004 and 2015 are currently being replaced by the latest generation of sorting modules. The system developed by the Swiss mechanical engineering company Borema Umwelttechnik AG uses the advantages of artificial intelligence for the first time. Thanks to this investment, the closed cycle of PET recycling is secured in the long term.

Sorting systems are one of the core elements of Swiss PET recycling. The more precisely the PET beverage bottles are separated from foreign substances and sorted by color, the higher quality recycled PET (R-PET) can be produced from the collected goods. Because R-PET is used again to make beverage bottles, the highest quality and food safety requirements must be met.

High-tech for environmental protection

In addition to the latest generation of laser and near-infrared sensors, Müller Recycling AG is now using artificial intelligence for the first time. Thanks to this, the collected goods can be identified and sorted even more precisely. The new system can sort up to 49 bottles per second with an accuracy of 99.96 percent. Jean-Claude Würmli, managing director of PET-Recycling Switzerland, is pleased about the new system: “Müller Recycling AG has been investing in PET recycling for over 30 years and is making a decisive contribution to the entire PET cycle in Switzerland takes place."

Trimmed for sustainability

In addition, the sorting hall and all other Müller Recycling AG halls were equipped with photovoltaic modules this year. These panels provide a significant portion of the electricity for the new PET sorting system and help make PET recycling even more environmentally friendly. With the new plant and the switch to green energy, Müller Recycling AG is making an important contribution to ensuring that PET recycling reaches the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement by 2030 at the latest.

PET sorting with tradition

In 1992, Müller Recycling AG opened the first PET sorting plant in Switzerland. At that time, around 800 tons of PET beverage bottles were sorted by hand every year. Manual sorting was supplemented by the first sorting modules in 1994. In 2004 and 2015 the system was expanded and adapted to the latest state of the art. The 2004 system is now being completely replaced, while the 2015 system is being supplemented with new sorting modules. The system was planned by Borema Umwelttechnik AG from Schwarzenbach (SG). By consistently relying on Swiss partners, the added value and know-how for this future industry remain in Switzerland.
