Global polyolefins leader LyondellBasell Industries unveiled the innovative offerings it plans to exhibit at K 2010, taking place in Düsseldorf, Germany, from October 27 to November 3.
LyondellBasell will focus on four key benefits it offers customers:
- Innovative products and expertise in new applications and markets
- Resins and technologies that reduce raw material usage, waste, energy and CO2 emissions
- Global material supply capabilities from world-class assets located in all regions of the world
- Continuous focus on the needs of a dynamic customer base
“We will demonstrate the unmatched product and service capabilities that polyolefins producers, converters and end-users have come to rely on for success,” said Anton de Vries, LyondellBasell’s senior vice president, olefins and polyolefins in Europe, Asia and International. “With know-how backed by decades of experience that includes pioneering discoveries in the development of polypropylene and polyethylene catalysts, technologies and products, we continue to offer customers additional value and differentiation potential by extending the boundaries of polyolefin performance.”
Expanded global reach
Approximately two million tonnes of polypropylene and polyethylene resins are marketed annually from LyondellBasell‘s three joint ventures in the Middle East.
In 2009, through its joint venture Saudi Ethylene and Polyethylene Company (SEPC), two world-scale plants began production: a 450 KT per year Lupotech T LDPE plant and a 400 KT per year Hostalen Advanced Cascade Process (ACP) HDPE plant, both the largest of their kind. The same year, the company’s Al-Waha joint venture started up its 450 KT per year Spherizone process plant, also the world’s largest, which produces a highly competitive mix of PP products with significant performance advantages. Recently, one of the company’s joint ventures in Asia, HMC Polymers, added a third PP production line based on the Spherizone process that increased capacity by 300 KT per year.
Material savings through Spherizone process
LyondellBasell’s Spherizone high-performance PP resins enable customers to access new applications and markets with products that deliver superior value. Typical customer applications include thin-walled packaging, film, textiles and pipe. Thin-walled packaging enables customers to reduce raw material costs, waste and energy costs.
World-class assets and technologies
Benchmark process technologies continue to help LyondellBasell meet converter needs while maintaining its leadership position in mature markets. With the start up of its new Hostalen ACP HDPE plant, located in Münchsmünster near Munich, Germany, all of the company’s HDPE sites will utilize this leading technology. The ACP technology produces some of the most advanced HDPE grades on the market, such as Hostalen CRP 100 RESIST CR black. The product addresses the needs of customers that require high stress-cracking resistance for non-conventional pipe installation methods.
Production advantages
LyondellBasell’s PP compounds used in automotive components offer significant manufacturing benefits. Hifax molded-in-color (MIC) resins used in bumper trim components such as the lateral bars and upper and lower grills of BMW’s X1 SUV contain an aluminum flake pigmentation that provides a unique metallic appearance. Historically produced using painted ABS to achieve these aesthetic requirements, the parts do not require additional painting, which offers manufacturers the potential to save costs and reduce CO2 emissions.
Expanded properties
With the company’s new Purell PE 3420F grade, LyondellBasell continues to expand the boundaries of traditional LDPE properties. Used in pharmaceutical packaging, the grade represents a new LDPE performance benchmark with a density of 0.933 g/cm3. Purell PE 3420F resins process easily and have a wide range of best-in-class mechanical properties. Compared to standard LDPE, the grade has very high sterilization temperature resistance and provides significant wall-thickness reduction potential, which offer cost-saving capabilities for customers using blow-fill-seal (BFS) technology.
