Greiner Packaging to close production facilities

A total of 110 employees in Wernberg, Carinthia/Austria and Rastatt, Baden-Württemberg/Germany will be affected and a socially acceptable solution is thus being sought.

The production facilities in Wernberg and Rastatt, which have been losing money for quite some time, will probably close in mid-2019. This is due to the fact that in spite of comprehensive restructuring in recent years, the international viability of the two plants could not be sufficiently secured in what is an increasingly competitive environment. Bottle production, which constitutes the bulk of the Carinthian operation’s business, will be transferred to the Greiner Packaging location in Kremsmünster, Austria.

A redundancy plan for the workforce

A total of around 110 employees at the Wernberg (A) and Rastatt (D) locations will be affected by the closures and in these difficult circumstances they are now to be offered maximum support. Attempts will be made to find them alternative job offers at other locations, both within Greiner Packaging and the Greiner Group. In addition, a redundancy plan will be prepared in order to find a socially tolerable solution for all those involved.

Group spokesperson, Ute Kliemstein: “In spite of intensive restructuring efforts, the Wernberg and Rastatt facilities have continued to make losses. Therefore, within the framework of a strategic process, we have decided to outsource certain production areas to other locations within the Greiner Packaging Group. Consequently, in future bottle production will be concentrated at our location in Kremsmünster, Upper Austria.” Ms Kliemstein also stresses that: “With regard to the affected colleagues, we greatly regret this step and will be meticulous in the handling of our decision. Accordingly, we will endeavor to offer them other employment within the group and also draw up redundancy plans that will provide the best possible, socially acceptable solutions.”
