By switching to packaging of 100 per cent recycled plastic, Coca-Cola wants to contribute to the transition towards a circular economy where all packaging is collected, reused or recycled. Increasing the proportion of recycled material in packaging is an effective way of reducing its carbon footprint.
Plastic is an effective packaging material, provided that it is collected and reused so that nothing is rubbish. Coca-Cola in Sweden wants to help contribute to the transition towards a circular economy. Now we take a big step when we as the first market in the world go over to 100 percent recycled plastic for the entire locally produced portfolio, ”says Sofie Eliasson Morsink, CEO of Coca-Cola European Partners Sverige AB.

Coca-Cola in Sweden first out to change the entire locally produced PET portfolio to 100 percent recycled plastic
Coca-Cola in Sweden is the first market in the world to switch to 100 percent recycled plastic for the entire locally produced portfolio. The changeover will commence during the first quarter of 2020 and concerns all PET bottles produced in Jordbro. The change means a reduction in the use of newly manufactured plastics by approximately 3,500 tonnes per year.
The transition to 100 per cent recycled plastic for PET bottles concerns the Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and Bonaqua brands and comprises about 40 different variants. The use of freshly made plastic is thus reduced by around 3,500 tonnes per year. This means a reduction of CO2 emissions by 25 percent per year compared to before the transition, when the portfolio consisted of about 40 percent recycled plastic.
Coca-Cola has a global ambition to work for a world without packaging waste, which includes the goal of collecting every bottle that is put on the market. Each respective market is encouraged to go further and faster in accordance with local conditions. Coca-Cola works in collaboration with local and national partners and through communicationin Sweden for all packages to be collected and pledged so that they can be used again.
Sweden is at the forefront in several areas of packaging and sustainability and through Returpack has a world-class collection model. This is a big contributing reason why we can now make this change. As a major player, we have a responsibility to contribute to a circular economy in the beverage industry, ” says Sofie Eliasson Morsink.
