Innovative dry preform decontamination system in Sidel Combi line achieves ESL at lower cost, higher efficiency vs. conventional methods.
As market demand for flavored milk, coffee creamer, and other premium dairy products grows, Byrne Dairy sought to expand capacity in order to better serve customers in the Eastern United States. “Our goals were extended shelf life, to provide consumer-preferred packaging, and a competitive cost structure,” said Carl Byrne, President. “We initially evaluated aseptic and conventional ESL filling technologies, but found them cost prohibitive. Package weight and waste water generated also made the solutions less sustainable than we had hoped.” |
Byrne’s Ultra division ultimately selected a Sensofill FMm Combi Ultra line from Sidel. This 18,000 bottle/hour complete line incorporates Sidel’s Predis™ dry preform decontamination system with bottle blow molding and filling on a Sidel Combi line. “No other solution – conventional ESL or aseptic – offered us the efficiency, sustainability, and competitive cost structure that Sidel could,” according to Byrne. “With the desired ESL, a lightweight PET bottle, no waste water, and no empty bottle handling, there was no question.”
“Byrne is a pioneer in dairy. The company is taking advantage of Sidel’s Combi technology, already widely deployed in higher volume beverage segments including water and soft drinks. Combined with Sidel’s proprietary Predis™ dry preform decontamination system, this enables Byrne to leapfrog competition with optimized packaging, and water and energy savings,” said David Schroeder, North American Zone Vice President for Sidel.
The line will produce ESL milk, flavored milk, and coffee creamers in 8, 12, 32, and 64 oz. sizes.
