6:47 min Caps & Closures
BERICAP GmbH & Co. KG Budenheim, Germany

BERICAP, a worldwide operating manufacturer of plastic closures, will, as in previous years, be exhibiting at the drinktec 2009. Bericap will present solutions for packaging weight savings, new solutions for aseptic fillings, latest developments in the sports closure segment and will underline the advantage of scavenging systems for oxygen sensitive products.Light weighting packaging saves costs and reduces carbon footprintDuring the last couple of years BERICAP has targeted at reducing neck and closure weight and in consequence resin consumption in order to save cost for its customers and in order to reduce at the same time the carbon footprint to protect the environment.BERICAP’s development of the product family SuperShorty® was one step into this direction. Suitable for the light weight neck finish PCO 1881 BERICAP introduced SuperShorty® Crown for the beer market, followed by SuperShorty® CSD for carbonated beverages, enlarged by SuperShorty® CSD Eco as a low weight alternative for carbonated products and finally completed with SuperShorty® Still for still drinks. A SuperShorty® variant for hot fill application is also available. Compared to PCO 1810 neck finish and related closure, the PCO 1881 neck finish in combination with SuperShorty® can save up to 28% of resin used for neck and closure.   The venting capacity of the SuperShorty® design ensures safe venting on 2,5-l-bottles filled with up to 4,5 Vol% CO2. All SuperShorty® variants are equipped with the well-proven DoubleSeal™ system for safe sealing also under hot climate conditions. In addition SuperShorty® has been perfected to ensure proper rinsing after wet decontamination in aseptic filling lines. Using the SuperShorty® concept BERICAP has just recently amended the SuperShorty® closure range with a 35mm closure.  SuperShorty® 35 is designed for safe venting of CSD drinks containing up to 4,5 Vol% CO2. The one-start neck corresponds with SuperShorty® 35 and has a neck weight of only 5 g.Market studies have shown that the 35mm neck finish is seen as offering true ready to drink convenience for the consumer. This SuperShorty® 35 is both a technical and marketing solution for brand owners and packers wishing to distinguish their brands on the shelf.Another market segment looking for light weight and cost saving solutions, still fulfilling the requirements of a modern package, is the strongly growing still water market.BERICAP has developed the closure range HexaLite® for bottling of still water. The HexaLite® exists as HexaLite® 26 FB, suitable for light weighted 26 mm neck finish and the HexaLite® 29 FB, suitable for a light weighted 30 mm neck finish. The HexaLite® 26 FB can be an alternative to the 26,7mm closure or even for the PET 30/25 neck if people want to achieve maximum weight saving. Production of HexaLite® 26 FB has started successfully in August 2008.    All HexaLite® closures are equipped with a slit and folded safety band (flexband) for efficient TE performance, reliable and forgiving application also on high-speed lines. The sealing system has been designed for maximum tightness.Aseptic fillingBERICAP has successfully sold to the market in recent years 38mm closure solutions for aseptic filling. Bottle sizes in the market of aseptically filled products range from 250ml to 1,5l. Especially for smaller bottle sizes a smaller diameter neck and closure looks more appropriate, eases drinking from bottle and reduces packaging cost. BERICAP has developed HexaLite® 33. The neck finish and closure have a total weight of 5,1g which is 2,3g less than comparable 38mm solutions.Sportscap “Next Generation” for wet decontamination and hot filling   BERICAP has developed Push Pull sports cap “Next Generation” suitable for aseptic filling application and allowing wet and dry decontamination. The Push Pull sports cap “Next Generation” allows to replace current sports cap solutions which require irradiation of the closure or require aluminium seals for using of Push Pull sports caps with aseptically filled products. The design of the Push Pull sport closure “Next Generation” allows in addition bottling of most hotfilled products without the currently required aluminum foil for hotfilling. With its unique seal technology it ensures tightness against vacuum loss. This sports cap improves economics, simplifies the capping process and provides more comfort to consumers as well as better environmental profile to the package as the aluminum foil is eliminated for hotfilling.Performance on carbonated beverages is comparable to existing sports closures in this market. The newly developed “Next Generation” PUSH PULL sports closure will be first available for 28 mm PCO 1810, but will be extended to 38 mm, 2-start neck finish and to 28 mm PCO 1881neck finish.THUMB’UP®, the first sports cap combining one hand opening, comfort to drink, children safety and high flow rate is now available as light weight version for the light weight neck 26 mm and 29/25 mm, both being used mainly for water application. The THUMB’UP® 38 mm for 2 and 3-start neck, often used for isotonic drinks, does suit wet decontamination in aseptic application.   Oxygen Scavenger   Oxygen sensitive beverages i.e. juices or beer challenge the PET bottle and the closure with respect to oxygen transmission. BERICAP offers different closure solutions with oxygen scavenger in the diameters 28 mm (PCO 1810 & PCO 1881) and 38 mm, which perform a valuable contribution to the product protection. The oxygen scavenger integrated in the corresponding closure predominantly absorbs the oxygen which accumulates in the headspace after filling and is able to lower the oxygen content below the starting level over time.
