The ALBA Group, one of the world's leading recycling and environmental services providers and commodity suppliers, is expanding its exposure to Asia. As part of the trip to Berlin by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, the company yesterday signed a cooperation agreement in Tokyo for the construction and operation of a recycling plant for PET (polyethylene terephthalate). It is the first ALBA facility on Japanese soil.

Together with its local partner, the private waste management company SEIU Japan Ltd., Co., the Berlin-based company will set up operations in Greater Tokyo. The PET flake and PET pellet plant will have a capacity of 35,000 metric tons per year and will be operational by 2020. These products are then processed into recycled material for the plastics processing industry.

The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller: "I am very pleased that Berlin environmental technology and know-how from our capital in Asia are in demand. Berlin is increasingly becoming a research and development location for technologies of the future. Berlin companies have a good reputation worldwide and we can be proud of that."

"The joint venture aims to combine the strength of Japan's leading private waste management company with ALBA's leading recycling technology," said Dr. Axel Schweitzer, CEO of the ALBA Group, on the occasion of the signing of the cooperation agreement. "As an advanced industrialized country with an active environmental policy, Japan is a very interesting market for us." The joint venture with SEIU should therefore also consider further investment opportunities in the Japanese recycling industry.
