According to Abbey Labels this new development doubles the speed of cutting compared to previous single-anvil semi-rotary systems. The new semi-rotary die-cutting module boasts a top speed of 150m/min and a repeat of up to 508mm and allows the reuse of cutters and flexible dies.
As stated on their website the firm has first been introduced to the original Fast Track Die Module at Drupa, the largest printing equipment exhibition in the world, back in 2016. They wanted to further enhance the capabilities beyond a finishing machine with fast capabilities and envisioned the integration onto a narrow web flexo press for the more efficient production of labels.
According to Chairman Tom Allum the Fast Track Die was demonstrated as an inline solution for a digital press, when he first saw it in action in Germany. His immediate reaction was that it would be a better fit on a flexo press, which prints at much higher speeds and could take full advantage of this super-fast die-cutting capability.
The company claims that it was a natural choice to approach MPS Systems for this project, as they have worked with the Dutch manufacturer in the past with regards to their two most recent flexo presses. Abbey Label's expansion programme includes a £1.1m investment in an AB Graphic Digicon 3 finishing line and is growing their flexo print department. They are also expanding and reorganising the entire facility for increased workflow efficiency.
