A crystal-clear commitment to sustainability – tesafilm® Eco & Crystal now with 90 percent recycled PET backing

Norderstedt, Germany

  • tesafilm® Eco & Crystal: more sustainable, high-performing and, thanks to its high transparency, perfect for invisible bonding, fastening, and packing.
  • Consists of 90 percent recycled PET backing and a water-based acrylic adhesive.
  • The focus on more sustainable products is part of tesa’s sustainability strategy: By 2030, the share of recycled and bio-based materials in all products is to be increased to 70 percent.

tesa, the international manufacturer of innovative adhesive tapes and self-adhesive product solutions, is relaunching one of its classics. From now on, the well-known tesafilm® will be more sustainable and will be joined by the new “tesafilm® Eco & Crystal” line. The backing is made from 90 percent recycled PET, the adhesive mass from water-based acrylate, and the roll core from 100 percent industrially generated residues from plastic processing. In keeping with these developments, tesa is introducing a new design: The sustainable progress of tesafilm® Eco & Crystal will be visible on all packaging and at the POS. The product is available from specialist retailers and in selected online stores from September. Customers will then be able to purchase the more sustainable adhesive tape in retail stores from the beginning of 2024.

With this innovation, tesa is pursuing its agenda to improve product sustainability across all ranges. As part of its sustainability strategy, by 2030 tesa is aiming to increase the share of recycled and bio-based materials in all products to 70 percent and to reduce the use of non-recycled fossil-based plastic by half.

Sustainability meets strong performance and quality

With the high recycled portion in its backing material, the new tesafilm® Eco & Crystal is not only more sustainable, but also scores points for its high tensile strength and durability, coupled with high transparency. “We are delighted that with tesafilm® Eco & Crystal, we are able to offer our customers a product that is not only more sustainable, but also remains thoroughly impressive in its quality and performance. As part of our sustainability strategy, we are continually adapting existing ranges, and we’re aiming to pick up the pace of this process. Our well-known tesafilm® has gone through various stages of evolution over the years. Now, another crucial stage has been reached,” says Dr. Andreas Mack, Member of the Executive Board for the Consumer division at tesa.

The 90 percent PCR-PET (post-consumer recycled PET) content in the backing material of the new tesafilm® Eco & Crystal has been externally certified by UL-Solutions to the UL ECVP 2809-2 standard. The certificate for the INGEDE Method 121 is also available.

The product can therefore be disposed of with packaging in paper waste without risk to the paper recycling process. The packing materials in the range have also been tested, further developed, and mostly have a recycled paper content of 80-100 percent. The blister caps of the packaging are made of 100 percent PCR-PET. “For the launch, we have set our sights on all the components in the range. Individual packaging formats that have not yet been converted will gradually be replaced with more sustainable alternatives,” adds Mack.

Packing tape with 70 percent recycled PET to be launched in parallel

It’s not only the tesafilm® range that is becoming more sustainable with the launch of the new product; the associated production line for adhesive packaging tapes is also gaining a more sustainable product. tesapack® Eco & Ultra Strong, which is already available in a transparent version, is now being launched in brown. It consists of 70 percent recycled PET in the backing and is coated with a water-based acrylic adhesive. The manufacturing process is solvent-free, and the roll core is produced from 100 percent recycled cardboard. tesapack® Eco & Ultra Strong is also certified in accordance with INGEDE Method 12 and can be disposed of together with packaging in the paper waste. tesapack® Eco & Ultra Strong is notable for its particularly high tear resistance and adhesive strength. It’s therefore suitable even for heavy boxes weighing up to 30kg and thus occupies a premium position in the tesapack® range.

The PCR-PET-based products tesafilm® Eco & Crystal and tesapack® Eco & Ultra Strong are available immediately from specialist retailers and will be available in retail stores from January 2024.
