Pepsi® becomes first player in Thailand’s soft drinks market to use 100% rPET bottles

Pepsi® beverage by Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Company Limited has continued raising environmental awareness by recently partnering with the Property Management of Chulalongkorn University (PMCU) and ENVICCO Limited in organizing an official press conference to launch “Pepsi Recycled PET Bottle Campaign” and announce its readiness as the 1st player in soft drinks market starting use of 100% rPET bottles.

Suntory PepsiCo Thailand’s beverages in 100% rPET bottles will be available in the market by April 2023 under the “Fizzy Consciousness to Change the World” campaign, which reinforces its popular carbonated soft drink brand continuously presenting new trends to consumers as well as fortifying Pepsi's image as a top-of-mind brand among younger generations who care for the environment. Suntory PepsiCo Thailand and the PMCU will kick off this important moment by putting uniquely designed bins for PET bottle collection at the Siam Square area, starting from this coming Songkran festival until December 2023. The company has also teamed up with ENVICCO, the recycled plastic resin manufacturer firstly certified by the Food and Drug Administration of Thailand (FDA), in promoting “Bottle-to-Bottle Recycling” towards the circular economy.

Mr. Anawat Sangkhasap, Chief Marketing Officer, Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Company Limited, said “Over the years, Pepsi Thailand has committed to continue good-taste, fuzziness, and freshness for every fun moment of the Thai consumers though Pepsi and Pepsi No Sugar. This year the company takes great pride in announcing its readiness to become the first player in Thailand’s soft drinks market to use 100% rPET bottles as its beverage packaging, starting off with the 550 ml - Pepsi variants. The company has an ambitious goal to help reduce the amount of virgin PET usage through the ‘Fizzy Consciousness to Change the World’ campaign encouraging the next generations to have an environmentally conscious mindset. It is line with the commitment of Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand), as a manufacturer and distributor of beverages under the Suntory and PepsiCo brands in Thailand, in promoting sustainable packaging management, which starts from environmental-friendly packaging design by using good quality PET bottles that are 100% recyclable in order to recycle them into the recycled PET bottles or called ‘rPET bottles’. The rPET bottle is one of the megatrends in the sustainable packaging which global corporations are currently focusing on. In Thailand, the Ministry of Public Health has authorized the use of rPET for food and beverage packaging under the safety standards stipulated by the FDA. The company’s 550 ml - Pepsi and Pepsi No Sugar in the rPET bottles are scheduled to make their debuts in April. The other products under Suntory PepsiCo Thailand that will follow this step is the ready-to-drink TEA+ Oolong tea. Moreover, Pepsi’s new recycled packaging also highlights a ‘Pepsi 100% Recycled’ label to notify consumers about the company’s official rPET packaging initiative”.

Mr. Vorrapong Sukteera-anantachai, Director of the Property Management of Chulalongkorn University (PMCU), as the partner of the “Fizzy Consciousness to Change the World” campaign, said “the PMCU, as the manager of commercial areas surrounding Chulalongkorn University, has elevated the development of commercial spaces in the Samyan and Siam Square areas to create a smart city under the concept “SAMYAN SMART CITY”. The PMCU aims to transform Samyan and Siam areas into an integrated innovation city that can create value added to the surrounding communities and a balanced urban living while the quality of life is still retained. It also has a shared goal to support business development in the areas, with the ultimate goal of generating the best benefits for all stakeholders. The “SMART 7” core development strategies of the PMCU comprise of SMART MOBILITY, SMART ENERGY, SMART LIVING, SMART PEOPLE, SMART GOVERNANCE, SMART ECONOMY, and SMART ENVIRONMENT. The PMCU has carried out waste management in collaboration with the Chulalongkorn University’s CHULA ZERO WASTE program to reduce waste from upstream and efficiently manage downstream waste in line with the Zero Waste principle. The PMCU has also implemented advanced waste management and comprehensive waste disposal measures from 2019 until today to completely get rid of all types of waste in areas under the supervision of the PMCU to achieve the zero-waste goal. Regarding the “Fizzy Consciousness to Change the World” campaign that is jointly launched in collaboration with Pepsi, it aligns with the PMCU’s waste management policy, especially in the area of the “SMART ENVIRONMENT” that promotes public participation in waste segregation from upstream. The segregated wastes will go to recycling process which helps to reduce waste volume and global warming. This will benefit the society in a sustainable manner”.

The first activity under the “Fizzy Consciousness to Change the World” campaign in collaboration between Pepsi and PMCU will be kicked off by putting PET bottle collection bins at Siam Square, starting from this coming Songkran festival until December 2023 to collect the used PET bottles from public. The Thai famous boyband “PROXIE”, the presenter of Pepsi, also attended the press conference to encourage more younger generations’ attention in plastic waste issues and how to manage post-consumer plastic packaging. In addition, a range of cool activities and events will be in place at Siam Square including the annual 2023 Songkran Siam ‘Pha Khao Ma Ploi Joy’. All used PET bottles will be collected and turn into a surprise activity in the end of this year.
