PepsiCo Germany: Lipton brand switches to 100% rPET bottles

Neu-Isenburg, Germany

  • With Lipton, PepsiCo is making a significant contribution to a sustainable transformation of the beverage market
  • PepsiCo pioneering the bottle-to-bottle circular economy
  • The company's consumer research shows that consumers want investments in sustainable solutions

After PepsiCo announced at the end of last year that it would be the first beverage company in Germany to exclusively use 100 percent recycled plastic (rPET) in all beverage bottles by the end of 2021, the world's second largest food company is already fulfilling its target with its Lipton brand much earlier. From April 2021, all bottles of the entire iced tea range will be made from 100 percent rPET. With this, Lipton is leading the sustainability agenda of the group, which has invested around seven million euros in Germany alone to advance its packaging strategy.

With the beverage brand Lipton, PepsiCo is already creating this important milestone in its sustainability agenda. With a view to Global Recycling Day on March 18, 2021, PepsiCo announces that all bottles of the entire iced tea range will be completely switched to 100 percent rPET from April 2021. Lipton is thus taking on a pioneering role in the plastics debate in this country. In the course of the year, all of the Group's carbonated beverages, such as the Pepsi, Pepsi Max and Schwip Schwap brands, will follow suit accordingly.

With the holistic conversion to rPET, PepsiCo will save 15,000 tons of new plastic or a CO2 equivalent of 28,500 tons per year. That corresponds to a quantity of around 12.42 million Lego bricks or the annual CO2 emissions of 6,200 cars.

The results of an internal PepsiCo consumer study from 2019 confirm the desire of consumers that large manufacturers should take on more responsibility and invest in sustainable solutions - just as PepsiCo is currently doing with its transformation of the PET bottle range towards 100 percent rPET. The study also shows the problem that plastic-free shopping in regular grocery stores is currently not yet sufficiently feasible for consumers. This is where Lipton comes in and will visibly show the use of 100 percent rPET on the bottle label.

"The switch to 100 percent rPET is of great importance for Pepsi Lipton Tea Venture and PepsiCo in Germany. We are delighted that, with Lipton, we are the first brand to fully implement our endeavors towards a sustainable transformation of the beverage industry," says Weiwei Yao, CEO of Pepsi Lipton Tea Venture. "We are determined to drive forward the vision of a closed circular economy with maximum recycling from bottle to bottle in the coming months and to realize it for all PepsiCo brands by the end of the year."
