Our latest market research shows that 76% of consumers across six countries want to recycle more, and consumers care most about the recyclability of packaging, when compared with options including the materials the packaging is made from and reusability*.
The numbers in our 2021 Sustainability Report highlight how we’re meeting this demand: 74% of the production weight of Amcor products was designed to be recycled in 2021 and recycle-ready solutions are now available for 76% of Amcor’s flexible packaging portfolio. In all, we have seen a 36% increase in the availability of recycle-ready solutions within our flexible packaging portfolio since 2019.
This represents strong progress against our pledge to design all our products to be recycled, composted or reused by 2025.
This headway could not have been made without innovation. Amcor’s innovations – backed by $100 million in annual research and development funding – mean we can produce more sustainable packaging and use more recycled content each year and in turn, enable customers to recycle as much as possible.
In 2021, this has resulted in new recycle-ready products like AmLite HeatFlex, a retort pouch that is designed to be recycled. It has already been adopted by the likes of Mars Food and Nestlé, supporting them in meeting their sustainability goals.
Vice President of Sustainability at Amcor David Clark shared that Amcor will continue to support consumers to recycle more: “We want to provide the responsible and high-performing packaging that consumers are now expecting – and our Sustainability Report shows that we’re delivering. The next step is for the infrastructure to be put in place to increase recycling rates. Amcor is driving a variety of important recycling infrastructure projects to ensure that packaging that is designed to be recyclable is recycled in practice and at scale.”
